Don't be in a rush to invest, build your corpus first

We tend to get excited to start investing or make a portfolio allocation as soon as we are flush with surplus funds. Unless you have taken the time prior to this to think through your investment philosophy, approach and execution it is usually never a good idea to dive into it.

Take the time to do your research, talk to people who have done it before and slowly build a pipeline of potential opportunities. Don't fret that your money is not working for you yet. Build your corpus in the meantime and get comfortable with the fact that you don't have to do anything with the funds until you are in a position to make an investment decision.
